Winds of change

Google has recently been making a lot of updates. Most are theme changes and consistency updates to their sites or user interfaces with the differing services offered. Part of this is an early invite I got to Google+ and so far I'm actually somewhat impressed. Most of this is most likely biased, but I do know that I have a history of not trusting Facebook and feeling more at east with Google with my info... even thought the thoroughness of the default profile made for me by Google when joining Goolge+ was a bit unnerving... every city in which I've lived, etc. Overall....

Facebook at work using SSH and a .pac file

I was able to finally get a proxy going at work to get around the facebook block. Took me a bit of trial and error, but I was able to get this working without an actual proxy server installed anywhere! Just a bit of SSH (with shell access to a remote linux box) and a crafty .pac file and you're on your way...

SSH:
$ ssh -D 9999 [user]@[remote server]

MPD + Icecast = Local Network Radio

For a while I've used the browser-based UI called Ampache to stream my music files from my server to the computer I am currently on. This works well considering you only need to be connected to my network, have a web browser and a media player that can handle streaming. But I've been thinking recently that I'd simply like to be able to 'tune-in' to my music, just like it was a radio station (minus commercials of course).

DVDstyler and Avidemux

Have you ever wanted to make a DVD-playable disc out of your collection of digital video files? If so, I would highly suggest the software bundle of DVDstyler and avidemux. Here's how I used them to create a custom DVD with a functional menu.

Installation::
If running on an Arch Linux system, run this:
#pacman -S dvdstyler avidemux
Otherwise, check with your distros package manager for those programs.

Use::

DreamWall

I recently watched 'The Secret', a film about the Law of Attraction and getting what you want simply by thinking about it, for the second time. The movie talks about creating a dream wall to put the things you most desire onto. Apparently, the trick to this whole law of attraction is simply thinking about what you want on a regular basis. Seemed simple enough, but i didn't have the time or patience to get a bulletin board and find things in print that I wanted or find them online and print them out. ("eew, hardcopy.")
